20 game series that deserve a new sequel or remake

Whenever a video game sells well, it’s usually safe to assume it will get a sequel. For instance, you didn’t need Warner Bros. to tell you Hogwarts Legacy 2 would be a thing once the original made a billion dollars. You’re not the school bully, more of a school antihero, and you’ll be getting involved in all manner of trouble while also attempting to get good grades.

If you’re itching to wield a virtual lightsaber after binge-watching The Mandalorian, then look no further. Taking its cues from Dark Souls and Hollow Knight, Jedi Fallen Order is a giddy blend of Uncharted-esque cinematic adventure and challenging Metroidvania. Yet more crucially for Star Wars stans, the tale it tells is entirely canon. The combat is dynamic, the soundtrack is packed with 80s hits, and the writing is surprisingly deep.

While a sequel was supposedly confirmed by Bully’s original composer over a decade ago, nothing has come of it yet, and we wonder if we’ll ever get to return to life in Bullworth. A sequel was planned for the Nintendo GameCube called Donkey Kong Racing that was to feature Donkey Kong as the main character. However, when Microsoft acquired the rights to Rare in 2002, the game was re-worked, and ultimately cancelled. We’ll most likely never see a sequel to Diddy Kong Racing, but now that Nintendo and Microsoft are playing nice with each other, anything can happen. Though it sold over 2.1 million copies, SEGA deemed this commercial performance insufficient.

For Fish, who’d been feeling burned out following Fez’s long development cycle—and who has some harsh words for the video game industry as a whole—it was apparently too much. Fish posted one last Twitter message—”im done. FEZ II is canceled. goodbye,”—locked his account, and promptly exited the game industry. At first, fans and press assumed that Fish, who had a history of histrionics, was joking.

Doom: The Dark Ages Review – The Good Kind of Heresy

It had racing on land, sky, and water, with a variety of vehicles. It had an expansive single-player story mode with boss fights and challenging races, offering a larger and more varied experience compared to Mario Kart 64. This game did receive a remake a long time ago on the original Xbox. The game consists of a straightforward story that retells how Conker became king in one day with a Clockwork Orange-style opening. Whether the sequel follows Jimmy Hopkins, a relative of the iconic character, or features an entirely new cast of characters, fans of the series would be ecstatic to run around in the world of Bully again. There have been additional Star Fox games released since the debut of Star Fox Adventures, but none of them quite capture that same feeling.

Another game that holds a cherished place in my heart as well as many others, Marc Ecko’s Getting Up is one of the few video games that accurately captures the fun and excitement of being a street artist. However, beyond that, it was also the first completely-realized digital representation of Springfield where players could go and explore seemingly every location from the beloved cartoon series. To get started, we’re revisiting one of the most passionately requested video game sequels, a follow-up to Rockstar’s open-world game Bully. I’m not a huge fan of open-world type games with seemingly endless optional side quests, but Rockstar always gives autonomy in a way that’s exciting and fresh, without ever getting repetitive. There was so much to enjoy in Bully‘s somewhat limited setting when compared to Grand Theft Auto. It perfectly captured that feeling of being a rebellious kid with the world as their oyster. Much like TimeSplitters and Saints Row, Bully is one of those games that may “offend” the modern audience.

It has online elements too, which makes the game more entertaining. Building your own city one structure at a time can be a really calming experience. House Flipper is the kind of game you should play when you’re stressed out or need a break after a long day of work. The open-source remake of Transport Tycoon Deluxe lets you build sprawling transport networks with trains, planes, and ships. Pixel-art graphics meet deep economic simulation—mod support extends replayability infinitely. Some consider Spelunky HD, released in 2012, to be so robust of an update that it can be considered a sequel unto itself.

These games are gone, but not forgotten — here are the top 25 games that should have received a sequel but never did. In spite of positive reviews, Square Enix’s “unrealistic expectations” led to the studio’s eventual closure following the sequel’s cancellation.
